Sarah Lewis came to the USA from Wales to be reunited with Evan John shortly before their marriage on Dec 21, 1869 in Marion County, Indiana. They first lived in Indiana, where their eldest three children were born, before making their way West, first to Nortonville, Contra Costa County, California then to Forest, Sierra County California. Sadly, her life was cut short when, during a mental breakdown following the attempted attack on one of her daughters, she drowned in the Bald Mountain [gold] Mining Company reservoir. She left behind to grieve, her husband, Evan, and their
eight children, ages sixteen years to eleven months old.

A Tramp's Dastardly Work:
Forest City, October 29th. Last evening a drunken tramp here chased Evan Johns' girl, aged 12 years, it is supposed for the purpose of assault. By his falling into a ditch she escaped. The affair so preyed on the mind of her mother as to bring on a temporary fit of insanity, to which she was at times subjected. She stole out of the house, and was found drowned in the Bald Mountain Mining Company's reservoir at daybreak this morning. She leaves behind a husband and eight children. The tramp was arrested and sentenced to thirty days in jail.
