In 1855, Eliza Rector Babb Hill was born in NW Arkansas, in Washington County (near Fayetteville). By 1860, the family was residing in adjacent Crawford County.
During the Civil War, NW Arkansas was turbulent with violence and raids by various parties on families, their food and livestock. Eliza's father, a former justice of the peace, Tristrum Ewen Babb, was murdered in 1864 by "Lone Star," a person known to him.
Eliza would marry and start a family there in Lee Creek, until 1881, when she and her husband, Sam Hill, and children moved to Katemcy, Mason County, Texas.
"Eliza was almost blind by the age of 16, and sewed with a blind person's needle. Eliza cared for her family, doing all her own cooking and house work. After her husband's death in 1923, [in Katemcy, Texas] she moved to California and made her home with her son, Frank Hill. She chose to be buried in Glen Haven Park, near San Fernando, California, rather than in Texas, by her husband Samuel, so that six of her grandsons could carry her casket."
