John Ballard Dead.

John Ballard, a well known resident of Winfield, died at the home of his mother, Mrs. George Emerson, 321 East Eleventh avenue, Saturday evening at six-thirty o'clock and the news of his death was a great shock to the many friends of the family.

Mr. Ballard was ill just one week and the cause of his death was apoplexy.

John Ballard was the son of Mrs. Pella Ballard Emerson and was born in Leroy, New York, May 10, 1872, and died January 20, 1923, aged 50 years, 8 months and 10 days.

His father Frank Ballard, died when John was a small child. Later his mother was married to Dr. George Emerson, who was in every respect a father to him.

Mr. Ballard's solicitude for his parents, Mrs. George Emerson and the late Dr. Emerson, was one of the incidents of his life. His devotion to them was unusual and since the death of Dr. Emerson in April 1921, he has been especially attentive to his mother, looking after her most tenderly.

He was for years pharmacist with Plagmann and Doane pharmacy and for the past ten years has been associated with David Irwin of the Winfield Furniture Company store, where he was trusted and respected, by all for his steadiness and reliability in business.

The Emerson family came to Winfield forty-five years ago and here John Ballard has grown to manhood and attended the city schools.

In June, 1900, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Sloan, who with the mother and one sister, Mrs. John Fields of Oklahoma City, survive.

Mr. Ballard was a Mason of the thirty-second degree.

The funeral was held from the home Tuesday morning at ten o'clock, conducted by Rev. George Tyner of Grace Episcopal Church. The Masons attended in a body and conducted the services at the Mausoleum in Highland cemetery, where interment was made.
