Enlisted U.S. Army, 1 April 1953, Basic training at Ft. Riley, KS Î;10M Infantry Mountain Climbing (Rangers), August 1953 to Kaiserlautein Germany. Assigned to 249th Combat Engineers, cleared mine fields, built Railroad Bridges and Roads. Honorable Discharge April 1956.
Enlisted Reserve April 1956-December 1960. Re-enlisted December 1960. Ft. Leonard Wood MO. for 8 week refresher course then February 1961 was in Schofield Barracks, Honolulu Hawaii. Assigned to 25th Infantry Division (Jungle Warfare) then March 1964 to Ft. Lewis Washington with 4th Infantry Division.
Vietnam, Mac Division November, 1966-February 1968, Ft. Carson CO.
Awards: 3 overseas bars, Vietnam service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal, Combat Infantry badge with wreath and star, Marksman-M16: expert; Marksman-M-14; Vietnam 3 bronze stars; 18 Major battles Vietnam [9 both years]; U.S. Army commendation medal-March 1969-March 1970; Purple Heart, Vietnam, [1 each year]; Good conduct medal [4 awards]; Army of Occupation medal [Germany]; NATO Defense medal/Oakleaf Cluster

Fred H. Berry, 71, of Des Moines died on May 13, 2007 at the Hospice Kavanagh House on 56th. It was his wish that his body be donated to Des Moines University.
Fred retired from the Des Moines Public Schools and was a decorated Vietnam veteran.
He is survived by his four sons, Jerry (Robin) Baker of Des Moines, William (Becky) Berry of Altoona, Nicholas Berry of Bondurant and Kurt Berry of Urbandale; his sisters, Colleen Broughton and Eva Cooper as well as numerous grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Kavanagh on 56th.
