Stage, screen and television actor.
Born to French parents, he studied at the Paris Conservatory. Appeared briefly on the stage before debuting on the screen in 1936. Portly and progressively balding, he played character leads and important supporting roles in more than 180 film and TV-productions, becoming one of the most popular, versatile and sought-after actors in French, Italian and international cinema. Credits include "Hôtel du Nord" (1938), Le jour se lève" (1939)," Quai des Orfèvres" (1947), "Crime et châtiment" (1956), " Le président" (1961), " Le septième juré" (1962), " Les Barbouzes" (1965), "Le distrait" (1970), "Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire" (1972), "Le corps de mon ennemi" (1976) and "Le due vite di Mattia Pascal" (1985). He won a Golden Bear Award at the 1950 Berlin Film Festival and an honorary César (the French equivalent of an Oscar) just prior to his death from cancer.
He is the father of director Bertrand Blier.
