Actor. He is best remembered for his recurring portrayal as one of the comical Keystone Cops in several Mack Sennett film serials. Born Charlies Conklin, he began his career headlining in vaudeville until he was signed unto contract to the Keystone Film Corporation. After making his film debut in "A Submarine Pilot" (1915), he would go on to enjoy a successful career as a notable bit player appearing in over 500 features; often typecast as husbands, fathers, doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, politicians, eccentrics, neighbors, retail clerks, bankers, cowboys, sheriffs, neighbors, postmen, watchmen, waiters, salesmen, businessmen, firemen, clergymen, con-artists, historical figures, stockbrokers, butlers, and patriarchs. He appeared in such films as "Yankee Doodle in Berlin" (1919), "A Small Town Idol" (1921), "Beau Brummel" (1924), "The Gold Rush" (1925), "Hard Boiled" (1926), "Silk Stockings" (1927), "The Circus" (1928), "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930), "Iron Man" (1931), "What Price Hollywood?" During his career, he was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, was active within the Hollywood Democratic Committee, was a regular parishioner of the Catholic church, served as a theatrical instructor for the Pasadena Playhouse, served as a board member for his local divisions of the American Red Cross and The March of Dimes, and he was married to actress Irene Blake from 1913 until his death (their union produced 3 children). After appearing in what would be his final acting role in "Good Day for a Hanging" (1959), he died from undisclosed causes.
