William Arnold, the son of Lt. Joseph & Lydia {Fay} Arnold, was one of only three Town of Marlborough blacksmiths and he was well respected & successful. His shop was to the left of his residence on West Main Street. The house was built in 1790 and later became the homestead of his son, Winthrop. William married first Polly Rice in January of 1790 at Marlborough, Middlesex County, Mass. They had 3 children, Willard b. 1791, Stephen Hartwell b. 1792 and Polly Rice Arnold b. 1795. On 3 January 1797 he married his second wife, Relief Rice, in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Mass. They too had 3 children, Jackson b. 1797, Winthrop b. 1801 and Caroline b. 1807. Relief died in 1811. William was married for the third time to Susannah Gates on 23 April 1812 in Marlborough, Middlesex County, Mass. There was no issue.

The town's Christian Science Society bought the land in 1899 for their church and 20 years later the Arnold homestead was demolished. The Christian Science Church stands to this day at the corner of West Main and Winthrop streets. Son Winthrop and his family are buried at Maplewood Cemetery, Marlborough.

Inscription

Erected In memory of Mr. William
Arnold, who died Oct. 12, 1828, AEt 63

Sudden he was called to go,
And bid adieu to all below.

Sudden the vital spirit fled,
And he was numbered with the dead.
