Darlene's mother, Genevieve Cassidy Harvey, was my maternal grandmother's only sibling. Since she herself was an only child, Darlene was my mother's sole cousin on her mother's side. Technically Darlene was my first cousin once removed, but we had been close since I was a teenager, when we became fast friends.
Although she was ten years my senior, Darlene always seemed to me so young at heart. Best of all, she never judged or criticized. I could tell her anything and I knew she would not condemn. When I last saw her, in November of 2012, she patted the side of her bed and told me to climb up in there with her and her beloved little dog, Cheebe. We whispered and giggled like BFFs while Cheebe snoozed in the middle.
Darlene died in her sleep in the wee hours of Sunday, March 10, 2013. I loved her very much and I will miss her, but due to her strong testimony of faith in the Lord, I believe I will see her again someday.
She recognized her need of a Savior and had placed her trust in Jesus, "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." She had received the gift of eternal life and it was well with her soul.
Darlene is survived by her beloved husband, Wayland Forace Adams; sons Johnny Wade (Laurie) Adams and Jeremy Wayland Adams; stepdaughter Tammy Denise Adams (Damon) Dixon; five grandchildren: Will and Laura Beth Adams, Joshua Dixon and Heather Dixon Torres, and Marie Kemp Miller; four great-grandchildren: Destinie Dixon, Braiden Torres, Erin Miller and George Miller; and son-in-law George Kemp.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Harold C. Harvey and Genevieve M. Harvey, and a stepdaughter, Terri Kay Adams Kemp.
Darlene's funeral service took place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Rabenhorst East Funeral Home on Florida Boulevard in Baton Rouge, down the street from Greenoaks Memorial Park where she was later interred.
The funeral was attended by many who cherished Darlene, and there was as much laughter as there were tears. We rejoiced and reminisced, remembering Darlene as the remarkably generous spirit that she was. We know that her light has not gone out; it is still shining, only in the next room. While we who loved her live, our beloved Darlene will never be forgotten.
