Margaret Nell Kelly "Peg" Dakan, 87, a patient at Holbrook Nursing Home in Buckhannon for the past six years, passed away Friday evening, July 28, 2006, in the nursing home following an extended illness. She was born Nov. 26, 1918, at Elkins, a daughter of the late John Francis Kelly and Iris Steele Kelly. On April 26, 1944, at the Grace Episcopal Church in Elkins, she was married to Joseph Dale Dakan, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Joseph Gorby Dakan of Elkins and John Francis Dakan of Winchester, Ind.; and one grandson, Joseph Clay "JC" Dakan of Elkins. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Jack Flynn Kelly and James Steele Kelly; and one sister, Virginia Greene Kelly. Peg was a graduate of Elkins High School with the class of 1936 and was named West Virginia State Champion Cheerleader in that same year. She was a 4-H All Star and for several years was a Danforth Scholar to Camp Minnewonka in Michigan. She attended both Davis & Elkins College and Drake University in Iowa City, Iowa, and worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Widney prior to her marriage. She was a member of the PEO. She was an excellent dancer. Peg was a member of St. Brendan Catholic Church. Friends may call from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at Tomblyn Funeral Home of Elkins. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with Fr. William Anderson as the Presider. On Tuesday morning, Peg will be moved to St. Brendan Catholic Church where the Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. with Fr. William Anderson presiding. Interment will follow in St. Brendan Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to either St. Brendan Catholic Church, P.O. Box 2205, Elkins, W.Va. or the National Multiple Sclerosis Association, West Virginia Division, 111 Hale St., Charleston, W.Va. 25301.
