Susan (Sudie) was the youngest child of Roberson Lewis Jacobs and Elizabeth Caroline Crowley. Her father died just a year and a half after her birth, leaving Elizabeth to raise their four children herself. Starting in adolescence, Susan lived with her grandmother, Mary A. G. Jacobs , and two of her father's sisters, Melissa and Sudie's namesake, Susan Jacobs Hubbell .
Sudie married Frank Tripp Stone on February 10, 1916 in Richmond. Frank was in the service during most of their marriage. Before World War I he had already served 4 years in the Navy as a 1st Class Hospital Attendant which included service at the naval hospital at Mare Island, California. Frank Tripp Stone, Jr., "Stoney," was born in 1918. A few months later, Sudie lost her husband and was widowed for the first time. Sudie returned with Stoney to the home of her aunts, Melissa and Susan Jacobs.
Sudie then married John Deck on January 17, 1923 in Richmond. He was a widower with two children, a daughter 16 and a son 11. He was a carpenter and a plumber. His first wife, Jane Stone, had died in 1917. John and Sudie were already acquainted as Jane was the sister of Sudie's first husband. Sudie was their aunt before she was a stepmother to the children of Jane and John. Tragedy struck their blended family when Sudie's son Stoney died at the age of 9 in 1927. Several years later Sudie and John had one child, a son, Frank Stone Deck. Sudie was widowed for the second time 13 years into her marriage to John at his death in 1936.
Sudie married the last time to an Englishman 28 years her senior, Henry Thomas Brace, "Harry". They were married in Kansas City on March 15, 1942. Like Sudie, he had been widowed twice before. He had immigrated from England in approximately 1884 and was a long-time resident of Kansas City. He had one daughter by his first marriage, Elsie M. Brace. Elsie was just a few years younger than Sudie. Harry was a merchant, owner of H. T. Brace Co. (railroaders' equipment) and H. T. Brace Mercantile (clothing). Sudie and Harry were married just 9 years when he died at the age of 86. Sudie had one more tragedy to endure when her son Frank died in 1962.
In 1972 Sudie decided to move to Longview, Washington to be near her only nephew, John Crowley Jacobs, Jr. Her brother was the only sibling to have had a child.
Sudie had lived in Kansas City since her marriage to John Deck in 1923, always close to her step children, grandchildren and their families and not far from family in Richmond. However, she wanted to spend her last years with her brother's son and his family. Sudie had an estate sale, selling the house she once shared with H.T. Brace, furniture and housewares, giving a few pieces of furniture to family members. One of the items she gave us was a chest of drawers that had belonged to her parents that was made before the Civil War. Sudie now has a great, great granddaughter who will inherit the chest.
Sudie was a 50-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. I think she would be pleased with Find A Grave and its purpose.
