Donald E. Ehmke, 94, died December 28, 2010 in Winfield. His Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:30 am the First United Methodist Church in Winfield with Interment at Mt. Vernon Cemetery West of Winfield. Memorials have been established with Habitat for Humanity or Hope Fund at Cumbernauld Village. Friends may call Monday From 3:00-8:00 pm family will greet from 6:00-7:00 at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home.
Don was born December 26, 1916 at the Old Winfield Hospital. His parents were Harvey J and Kathryne (Schmidt) Ehmke. He attended Elsberry School though 8th grade and graduated from Winfield High School in 1935. He farmed and worked for others until he was drafted into the Army in 1942. He was an instructor at Camp Roberts, CA for 21/2 years in field artillery and served as a forward observer in the European theater. When the war in Europe was over he was in Czechoslovakia. He came home for a month and was sent to Japan until February of 1946 and was sent home discharging as a Staff Sergeant.
He married Ruth ( Bergdall ) June 9, 1946 and they lived west of Winfield farming for more than 61 years and raising 4 Children. Don farmed until 1993 moving to Cumbernauld in 2006.
In retirement Don and Ruth did mission work in Kentucky and New Mexico and traveled a great deal. Don's hobby in retirement was making chests for all the families that wanted one and other wood projects. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mizpah/Seekers SS Class and Methodist men. He had been a member of the township Bd.and served many years on the board of Directors of the Kellogg Co-Op,.

Don is survived by: Wife, Ruth of Cumbernauld, Sons , Donald "Keith" Ehmke Minneapolis, MN, Kim Alan Ehmke Wichita; Daughters, Sue and Charlie Kennedy Wichita, Karen and David Bethune Ringgold, Ga; Grandchildren, Dan Ehmke, Louis Kennedy, Derek Dinoni, Ashlea Servi; and 5 great grandchildren; Nephew, Bruce Ehmke Winfield. Her was preceded in death by a brother Gerald and sister Mildred
