Obituary and news article from the "Salt Lake Tribune" newspaper, Salt Lake City, Utah, dated Monday, December 20, 1948, page 8:
GIRLS BECOME "BUS PALS" JUST BEFORE -
(photo of Sherry)
The two little girls had a lot in common. Neither had been on a bus trip alone before. Both came from small towns. One was 12 years old, the other 11. Each was as excited about Christmas and a bus ride as a little girl can be.
So it was not unusual that Sherry Ann Cook, 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Cook, Gold Hill, Tooele County, soon became a "pal" to 11-year-old Jolene Bowcutt.
Sherry Ann was en route home from Salt Lake City - with 180 glorious miles to ride on the big bus. A student at Utah school for the deaf and blind, Sherry had progressed rapidly and was looking forward to Christmas at home.
Bus passengers smiled approvingly at the two little girls in the big bus seats.
But their first trip alone was the last for both. The westbound Burlington Trailways bus crashed into an eastbound vehicle. There were explosions and a big fire. After a while, everything was quiet.
Sherry Ann Cook was born in Salt Lake City, Nov. 7, 1936, a daughter of Fred A. and MerVell Lord Cook.
Survivors include her parents and a grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Lord, Ogden.
