Heart Ailment Claims Life of Valley Educator

Suffering a heart attack while on the deer hunt in Mayfield Canyon October 24th claimed the life of a prominent Gunnison educator, civic, church and community leader, Milton Andrew Christiansen, 64. Milt, as he was affectionately known, was hunting with members of his family when he was stricken and died before he could be brought to the doctor for medical attention. Time of death was established at 12:15 p.m.

Mr. Christiansen was born January 28, 1906 in Mayfield, the son of Orson Julius and Elnora Anderson Christiansen. He attended the schools in that community, was a graduate of Snow College and Utah State University. He took graduate work at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah.

He married Erma Larson in Preston, Idaho on September 18, 1928.

A school teacher, Mr. Christiansen had been employed the past 41 years in the South Sanpete School District and at the time of his death was an instructor at Gunnison Valley High School. He was a member of the National Education Association, the Utah Education Association and the South Sanpete Teachers Association.

Prominent as a civic leader, Mr. Christiansen served as Gunnison City's mayor from 1958 to 1962. He was also an active member of Gunnison Valley Lions Club and served in many positions of leadership on a community and church level.

An ardent sportsman, he loved to fish and hunt and enjoy the outdoors. He was a conservationist and did much to promote the preservation of all facets.

Also a humanitarian, Milt often went far out of his way to help those in need and to help care for the older generation.

Survivors include his widow, Gunnison; three sons and two daughters, MacRay Christiansen, Spanish Fork; Orson Christiansen, Salt Lake City; Stephen Christiansen, Richfield; Mrs. Blake (Lily Jean) Lott, Toppenish, Washington; Mrs. Moyle (DeOn) Jensen, Sandy; 18 grandchildren; one brother and two sisters, Lloyd Christiansen, Manti; Mrs. Kenneth(Orpha) Whitlock, Mayfield and Mrs. Leo (Hazel) Peterson, Glenwood.

FUNERAL SERVICES

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. October 27th in the Centerfield Ward L.D.S. Chapel under the direction of Gunnison Second Ward Bishop L. Grover Childs. The program honoring the prominent valley citizen was: prayer at the funeralhome, Blake Lott; prelude and postlude music, Mrs. Gilbert Fjeldsted and Mrs. Kent Sanders; invocation, Charles K. Whitlock; opening song, "That's America To Me," Keller Christiansen accompanied by Mrs. Christiansen; remarks, Bishop Childs; speaker, Mayor Woodrow Beck; tribute from Lions Club, Dallas Greener; song, "The Hills of Home", Boyd Goble accompanied by Mrs. Goble; speaker Paul Dyreng; song, "Abide With Me," Mrs. Junior Bown and Keller Christiansen accompanied by Mrs. Christiansen; benediction, Lawrence Anderson.

Burial was in the Gunnison City Cemetery under the direction of the Warren R. Jensen Funeral Home. The final resting place was tenderly dedicated by Raymond Larson.
