Edwin Francis "Doc" Leibold
Sequim resident Edwin Francis "Doc" Leibold died Dec. 4, 2006 in Sequin at the age of 90. Dr. Leibold was born Jan. 16, 1916 in Shakopee, Minn. to Mrs. Katherine J. (Engel) and Edwin G. Leibold. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree at University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. and went on to medical school at Marquette Univ. In June of 1940 he married Laurine C. Hiniker in Mankato, Minn.

In 1943 he served as a doctor with the U.S. Coast Guard in LaPush. The following year he was the USCG medical officer aboard the USS Everett, a Navy vessel on patrol and escort duty around the Aleutian Islands. In 1947 they settled in Forks where Dr. Leibold began his medical practice. Dr. Leibold continued his work at Forks Community hospital. He delivered over 800 babies and provided much of the medical care in the Forks area throughout his long career. In 1966 he joined the Volunteer Physicians for Vietnam program and spent his tour of duty working in a provincial hospital in Nha Trang, 200 miles northeast of Saigon.

He loved people and thrived on connecting with them by calling, writing or stopping for a visit. He reached out to dozens of people every week until he was no longer able to. He believed that everyone could make a contribution and he was responsible for encouraging and sponsoring many students and people in need. He devoted his life to serving others in many different ways. Dr. Leibold and his wife were active in the church and instrumental in building both St. Anne's church in Forks and St. Thomas the Apostle church in Clallam Bay. After retiring in 1986 they moved to Sequim, enjoying their winters in Thousand Palms, Calif. until after Mrs. Leibold's death in 1999.

Dr. Leibold is survived by sons and daughter-in-law Edwin and Ann Koch, Michael Leibold of Everett, John Leibold of Sekiu; daughters and sons-in-law Cici and Jim Medley of Seattle and Patty (Galen) Hoover of Selah; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
