Robert Edward Ellingwood, age 77, a life-long resident of Southern California, a two-term Mayor of Ontario and a resident of Ontario/Upland for nearly 50 years died peacefully in his sleep at his residence in Ontario on Friday, December 3rd. He was born on January 2, 1927 in Los Angeles to Karr W. and Mary Elizabeth (Davis) Ellingwood. He graduated from El Monte High School in 1944 and joined the US Navy during WW II. He served in the occupation forces in Japan and was honorably discharged in 1946. After his discharge from th e Navy, he moved to Ontario to attend Chaffey College.
In 1947, he also joined the Army with the Ontario National Guard, first as a Warrant Officer in communications. He later was promoted to Lieutenant in the Infantry when his unit was activated and sent to Korea. Of all his decorations for service to his country there, he was most proud of his Combat Infantry Badge, identifying him as a front-line soldier. In 1964 he became a Realtor, the profession he would practice for the remainder of his life. He was active in the Ontario/Upland/Chino Board of Realtors, rising to president of that organization. Later he served in statewide offices of the California Association of Realtors as a director. In 1978, he was elected to the first of his two terms as Mayor of Ontario. Among his many notable achievements was overseeing the creation of the Ontario Redevelopment Agency. He remai ned deeply involved in Ontario community and Veterans organization affairs for the remainder of his life. He was active in the American Legion Post 112 and aided many Veteran's causes, most especially those honoring the veterans of the Korean War.
