Joel was born in Madison County, Indiana. He moved with his father and brothers and sisters to Harrison County after the death of his mother. Joel served in the Civil War with John Lilly in Company G, 6th Regiment of the Cavallry, Missouri State Militia which was organized in 1962. He was honorably discharged 1865. He had served as a scout, furnishing his own horse. Following his return to Harrison county, Joel and Jane married; purchased farm land east of Blythedale, where they lived and raised their family.
