William E. "Edd" Basham Jr., 90, of Roanoke, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 11, 2013. He was preceded in death by his first wife (and the mother of his children), Frances Scruggs Basham; his second wife, Katie Mills Basham; parents, William E. Sr. and Edna Annie Basham; brother, Donald Eugene Basham; and sisters, Margaret Delores (Peggy) Basham, and Virginia Basham Williams. Mr. Basham retired from the United States Navy after 27 years of service. He served in the Pacific during World War II., then served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He and his family were stationed at the Guantonomo Bay Naval Station in Cuba in addition to his many assignments to sea duty. During the Vietnam War, he was assigned to the 2nd Marine Division and worked as an Advanced Hospital Corpsman. He attended Forest Park Baptist Church and later Grace United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion as well as the Disabled American Veterans.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at the Virginia Veterans Care Center for all the love and care provided during Edd's residency.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to the Salvation Army, Grace United Methodist Curch, or to a charity of the donor's choice .
Funeral services will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, by the Rev. E. E. "Dick" Jones. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday May 12, 2013, at Simpson Funeral Home. Arrangements by Simpson Funeral Home, Roanoke.
