From an article by Jim Scherer - Irene died while attempting to cross the North Fork of the Mokelumne River just below present day "Camp Irene". She slipped and was swept over a ledge and trapped under a rock where she drowned. She was with a group including Paul Noetling (who related the accident to Jim Scherer in 1947.) They were unable to save her. (Dr. Paul Noetling FAG #74022842.)

8-1-1942 "Calaveras Prospect & Citizen" obituary:
Irene was drowned Sunday while enjoying a two-week vacation on the Mokelumne River with her brother Albert, her sister-in-law, Mrs. Alvin Pecchenino and Dr. Paul R. Noetling of Angels Camp.

Last rites were held Thursday in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Angels Camps. Hundreds of friends attended graveside services at Altaville Catholic Cemetery consummated by members of Princess Parlor, Native Daughters of the Golden West, of which she was immediate past president.

She was survived by 2 sisters, Lillian Pecchenino & Mrs. Lucille Bernasconi and 4 brothers, Albert of Angels Camp, Alvin of Modesto, Celestino of Columbia & Vernon who is serving with the US Army in England.
