Benedetta was the daughter of Beraccio* and Angelina (nee Messina) Di Francisco. Her death certificate gives her place of birth as Italy but it is possible that she was born in Sicily.

Benedetta's headstone gives 1850 as her year of birth. The 1900 Federal Census gives April, 1849 as the month and year of birth.

Benedetta lived in the Fourth Ward section of Lower Manhattan with her husband Alfonso and children after immigrating from Sicily in 1896.

Benedetta and Alfonso were the parents of:

Francesco, 1865-1947
Benedetto, born 1870 (?)**
Rosario, born 1873
Joseph, 1882-1964
Angelina, born 1886
Carmela, born 1888
Antonio, 1890-1956

All of Alfonso and Benedetta's children were born in Caltanisetta, Resuttano, Sicily.

In addition to keeping home for her younger children (Joseph, Angelina, Carmela and Antonio) Benedetta also welcomed her husband's nieces, Alfonsa and Frances DeVita, to live with her during the period 1900-1915.

Benedetta became a widow in 1910. According to the 1915 New York State Census she was employed as an operator. Prior to this she was always listed in the census records as a housewife while her husband was alive.***

Benedetta was diagnosed with stomach cancer in January, 1920 and passed away on July 4, 1921.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Charles Bacigalupo, Inc. of 26 Mulberry Street. Benedetta was interred on July 6th, 1921 at Calvary Cemetery in Woodside, Queens, New York. She rests in the same plot as her husband Alfonso.

Sources:
*Her father's name might be Beraccio or Braccio. The handwritten death certificate is not clear and the ink has faded in places
**Benedetta's death certificate gives the informant as her son Benedetto. There was a mention in my notes of him being born circa 1870 but nothing else appears about in in any documentation I have so far. This could have been an error on the part of the clerk who recorded the information.
***Operator may mean sewing machine operator.
Death Certificate for Benedetta Torregrossa, #40018.

Further research of 1900, 1910 and 1920 Federal Census and Immigration records underway.
1915 NYS Census.

Memorial Manager's Note: Benedetta's maiden name is spelled Di Francisco and De Francesco on different documents in my possession. I have entered it here as it appears on the Death Certificate. Corrections will be made when I find the correct spelling.
