The war department made public today the names of 608 United States soldiers killed in action. The announcement includes casualties in the Asiatic, European, North African, North American, Pacific and Southwest Pacific areas. The names listed in North African area include casualty reports received from operations in Sicily.
Casualties in the following list are from the North African area except where indicated otherwise in brackets.

T/5 Peter M. Berkowicz was a soldier in the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. He was killed on 3 August 1943 in Sicily. T/5 Berkowicz was buried in the temporary American GELA Cemetery in grave D-42-501 on 4 August 1943. After the war his remains were repatriated and buried in the City Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, Il.
Over 1,200 men and women were buried in the GELA Cemetery between 1943-1947. I am writing a book about the GELA Cemetery and hope to finish it next year, 2013.
