He was believed to have served in the US Army in Europe during the Second World War. He later joined B Company 4th Infantry Battalion, USMC Reserve in Duluth, MN with the rank of Corporal. He was promoted to Sergeant and later Staff Sergeant while serving with the 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division in the Korean War when his reserve unit was activated. He was wounded in action at Yudam-ni during the Battle of Chosin Resevoir. After Korea he served as an air crewman in Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 (HMX-1) at Quantico, Virginia. He finished his Marine Corps career at Camp Lejeune, NC and settled with his family in nearby Jacksonville.
