Son of William Henry Duckworth and Emma Livesey Duckworth. Married Sarah Jane Mercer July 19th 1890.

WORLD WAR I VETERAN

John served with the British Army during the Boar War. He traveled through France, Germany, and Africa. He also was a sergeant with the United States Army during World War I. He received certificates for service in the Ambulance Corp. division. He also received a certificate of completion in a course that was called Pittman's Shorthand.

John and his wife Sarah along with his sister Nancy Sharples and her two children Harry and Jane migrated to Canada in the early part of 1906; leaving behind Nancy's husband John Sharples, who owned a large pub in Liverpool, and did not want to give it up. They stayed with relatives for a short while in Ontario Canada. Later, that same year they went to Vancouver; then from there, they took a ship to San Francisco, California ~ arriving just at the end of the big earthquake (1906), that nearly ruined San Francisco. The ship could not dock, as the pier had been destroyed, so passengers were taken off the ship by a boatswain chair. (A bucket type chair on a pulley rope).

From San Francisco they traveled by train to Los Angeles, to an area known as Boyle Heights. They bought a piece of Land, and lived in a tent, while they built their house.

When John wasn't serving with the Army, he was a building contractor. ~ Marguerite Duckworth (1991)

Cause of Death: Liver cancer.

A Silent Tear

Just close your eyes and you will see
All the memories that you have of me
Just sit and relax and you will find
I'm really still there inside your mind

Don't cry for me now I'm gone
For I am in the land of song
There is no pain, there is no fear
So dry away that silent tear

Don't think of me in the dark and cold
For here I am, no longer old
I'm in that place that's filled with love
Known to you all, as "up above." ~ Anon.
