2d Lt. 13 Co.
1 Berkshire Co. Regt.
Revolutionary War
Lt. John Adams III is often referred to in historical documents as "Deacon John Adams" and sometimes called "Jonathan". He was the son of Dr. John Adams II and Mary Parke. He married Chloe Curtis, the daughter of Capt. Allen (Allin/Allyn) Curtis and Ruth Stiles of Torrington, CT and referred to in most documents as Ruth Torrington. (note: many genealogists make the mistake of putting Chloe Rose as John's wife, but that is in error. See Chloe (Curtis) Adams for detailed explanation at end of her memorial).

Lt. John Adams was a Revolutionary war soldier and served first as a Private in Samuel Wolcott's Company, Col John Brown's regiment from Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and then as 2d Lieutenant in the 13th Company of the 1st Berkshire Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia under the command of Capt. Sylvanus Wilcox.

Interestingly, Lt. Adams' daughter Sarah (called "Sally") married one of John's soldiers, Private Rufus Wilcox who also happened to be the son of Lt. Adam's commanding officer, Capt. Sylvanus Wilcox.

Deacon (Lt.) John Adams, along with settlers, from Sheffield, Massachusetts, purchased a large amount of land from Oliver Phelps and Nathaniel Gorham. This area became the towns of East and West Bloomfield, Mendon, and Victor. John Adams is considered the founder of the town of Bloomfield. John and his wife Chloe (Curtis) Adams moved there with most of their sons and daughters as well as their spouses in 1789 and that is where he and his wife are interred in the local cemetery.

Dea. John Adams and Chloe (Curtis) Adams had at least 11 children:

1 - Jonathan Adams (1757-1811) m. Abigail Sperry
2 - John Adams IV (1760-1849) m. Aner Hickok/Hickox
3 - William Adams (1762-1821) m. Lucinda Hickok/Hickox
4 - Chloe Adams (1764-?) m. Ephraim Rew
5 - Sarah "Sally" Adams (1766-?) m. Rufus Wilcox (son of Capt. Sylvanus Wilcox and Chestina Curtis)
6 - Mary "Polly" Adams (1768-1843) m. Amos Lusk
7 - Ruth Adams (1770-?) m. John Keyes
8 - Abner Adams (1772-1847) m. Hannah Rowley
9 - Joseph Adams (1775-1830 or 1839) m. Eunice (lnu)
10 - Lucy Adams (1777-?) m1. Lorin Hull m2. Josiah Benjamin
11 - Huldah Adams (1780-1860) m. Silas Eggleston
12 - a couple other names surface that are could be the children of John Adams and Chloe Curtis, but could also be grandchildren. They include Hannah Adams b. abt 1780 and Darius Adams. The Hannah Adams found in documents could also be Hannah Rowley, wife of Abner Adams. Extensive research fails to make a clear connection.
