Ellis Christopher Browning, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, at his ranch home south of Bandera. With his passing, Bandera County lost one of its foremost ranchmen.
Born in Lometa, on April 10, 1916, he was a descendant of an early Texas pioneer family that had deep roots in Central Texas.
Mr. Browning attended Lometa area schools prior to joining the US Army in 1942. He saw action in Europe, beginning with the Normandy invasion and continuing through the Ardennes and the Rhineland. Among other awards, he received five Bronze Stars.
In 1950, Mr. Browning married Olga Leibold, daughter of Eddie H. Leibold, a prominent area rancher. For the following 57 years, the couple enjoyed a good life and good marriage, working effectively together in their farming and ranching enterprise. Today, their two sons carry on the family's ranching heritage on property first settled by their great-grandfather.
Mr. Browning's passing is felt across the Hill Country as he was a gentleman of the old school, respected and esteemed by all who knew him. His word was his bond.
Survivors include his wife, Olga; sons, Edwin Ellis and his wife, Vicki; and Bodie Joseph Browning and LaRue Browning; granddaughter, Kari; grandson, Edwin Ellis Jr.; and great-grandson, William. Also surviving are cousins Tommy and Allie Jo Harbour.
Services were held Saturday, Sept. 22, at Grimes Funeral Chapel, with the Reverend Martin Smith officiating. Pallbearers were Rick Anderson, George Hamilton, John Hamilton, Clyde Kimbro, Gary Johnston and Billy Walker. John Bruce served as honorary pallbearer.
Arrangements are entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Bandera.
