Pearl Phillips and a friend, Harold Bonta, were ice skating on the river by the Atlee riprapping. They fell through the ice, a couple of other boys witnessed the event, but fearing punishment for themselves, told no one. Pearl and Harold drowned. Harold's body was recovered shortly after, but Pearl's was not recovered until the spring thaw, downriver not far from Montrose. A piece of cloth from his shirt was snagged on initial recovery efforts and confirmed a match with the missing piece from the shirt found on the remains which were finally found in March. His brother, Grover, also aided in identification of Pearl's remains.
