After World War II he resumed his education at Syracuse University. He was the first tuba major to graduate from Syracuse University in 1949. Upon graduation, Mr. Balestra began his teaching career at LaFayette Central School. He was supervisor of music for over 20 years.
He was one of the principal brass adjudicators for the New York State School Music Association for 25 years.
After 28 years of teaching at LaFayette Central, he retired in 1978. While teaching at LaFayette, he was appointed Adjunct Professor of tuba at Syracuse University in 1954, and held that position until 1980 when he retired.
