VERNON - Grace Janette Adams, age 91, formerly of Vernon and most recently of the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, passed away early Friday morning, Sept. 7, 2012 with her daughter at her side.
She was born on Oct. 25, 1920 in East Herkimer, N.Y., a daughter of the late Clyde and Laura (Eysaman) Petrie. Janette was a graduate of Herkimer High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Syracuse University.
On July 1, 1943 Janette and Charles D. Adams were united in marriage in Brazos, Texas and shared that union until Charles' death on Jan. 28, 1972.
Janette retired on July 1, 1984 from V.V.S. Central School where she spent her entire career as an elementary teacher and reading specialist.
In her earlier years she enjoyed being a Den Mother and Cub Scout leader. Family was most important to Janette. She loved spending time with them, and was an enthusiastic fan of her children and grandchildren as they played sports throughout the years. She was an avid reader, loved crossword puzzles, Syracuse basketball, flower gardens and time at camp with her family. She was a very active member of the Vernon United Methodist Church for many years. Other memberships included the Retired Teachers Association and BPW (Business Professional Women).
Surviving are her three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia (Robert) Rowland of Myrtle Beach, Cindy (Paul) Swistak of Verona, Linda (Cliff) Hand of Mayfield; one son and daughter-in-law, Alan (Doreen) Adams of Geneva, Ill.; two daughters-in-law, Emily Adams of Vernon and Wendy Clark of Wilmington, N.C.; 17 grandchildren, Kim, Jeff, Jim, Kari, Derek, Candace, Julia, Matt, Diana, Rachel, Danette, Shawn, Jenny, Megan, Adam, Ryan and Jason. Also surviving are many great-grandchildren; one sister, Katherine Kenna of Schenectady and special friends, Kathy and Mary Dowling.
Grace was predeceased by her husband, Charles; two sons, Charles Adams Jr. and Walter Adams, also two brothers, John and Dickie Petrie.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Oneida Extended Care Facility for the excellent care and compassion given to their mom while she was a resident.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made In Memory of Janette Adams, to the Vernon Methodist Church, 5230 W. Seneca St., Vernon, N.Y. 13476.
Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012 from 4-7 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front St., Vernon. Mrs. Adams' funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. at the Vernon United Methodist Church, East Seneca Street, Vernon with Rev. Frank Loan officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vernon, N.Y.
Her beauty, sense of humor, and unconditional love have been etched into our hearts. Thank you mom (grandmother) for touching our lives, molding us into who we are, for being you.
