Recruited and enlisted during the Civil War with Company G (Wis.), 1st Regiment, United States (Vol.) Sharpshooters (Berdan's) from Oak Grove, Wisconsin (near Beaver Dam), on August 20th, 1862. When the original company mustered out in September of 1864, he was transferred to older companies of the U.S.S.S., then to Comapny B of the 36th Wisconsin Infantry. He mustered out on February 18th, 1865.
He married a Frances (unknown) on July 31, 1865 in Dodge County, Wisconsin.
In 1880, he had four children with her in Farmington, Whitman County, WA:
William Milo "Willie", age 14
George, age 10
Zellah, age 9
Bertte, age 3
He married Emma Benson (nee Swegle) in February of 1908.
