Robert Algermissen, age 90, a resident of Albuquerque since 1968, passed away on Monday, November 19, 2012.
Robert is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Margaret Mary, daughters, Mary and her husband, Tatum M. Sheffield of Missouri City, TX and Margaret and her husband, Dr. Francesco Bertoni of Rome, Italy, sons, Robert (Col., Ret., US Army) and his wife, Jane of Albuquerque, Dr. Anthony and his wife, Dr. Holly Dietz of Albuquerque, Francis of Rowlett, TX and Andrew of El Paso, TX, 10 grandchildren, Charles and Michael Sheffield, Anna, Ella, and John Algermissen, Andrew Algermissen, and Clara, Daniel and Leonardo Bertoni, brother, Joseph of San Antonio, TX and his sister, Eileen Hayden of Columbia, MO.
Robert was preceded in death by a son, Charles, brother, James and granddaughter, Isabel Bertoni.
Robert graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, NY on D-Day, 6 June 1944 and became a United States Air Force pilot. Highlights of his career included Masters Degrees in Nuclear Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology and in Public Administration from Harvard University; a tour teaching cadets in the Mathematics Department of West Point, a tour in War Plans at Headquarters United States Air Force and as Director of Engineering at the Aeronautical Systems Division, Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, OH. Robert retired from active duty as a Colonel in 1968 and then worked at the AF Special Weapons Center and AF Weapons Laboratory until 1984.
Robert was an avid golfer, recording two holes-in-one and shooting his age regularly beginning at age 72. Robert was a Rules Official for the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association for nearly 25 years. As a volunteer he also served as an instructor in the Albuquerque Adult Literacy Program.
Over all, he was a pretty good guy.
Rosary will be recited on Friday, November 23, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 4020 Lomas Blvd. NE. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 8:00 a.m., also at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
