Steve Appleton, chairman and CEO of Micron Technology, has died in the crash of a small plane in Boise, Idaho, the company said Friday.

Appleton was an avid pilot who flew in airshows and was also an off-road car racer.

Appleton survived a 2004 crash that occurred while he was flying aerobatic manuevers over the Idaho desert. Witnesses said Appleton and a passenger crawled from the wreckage after the crash, which was blamed on pilot error, according to the Idaho Statesman.

Micron Technology, founded in 1978, is one of the world's top producers of semiconductors. It has about 20,000 worldwide employees and had revenues of $8.7 billion in its latest fiscal year.

Appleton joined Micron in 1983 and held a series of increasingly responsible positions, including production manager, director of manufacturing, and vice president of manufacturing, according to the company's website. In 1991, he was appointed president and chief operating officer and in 1994 he was appointed chairman, chief executive officer and president. He assumed his current position in 2007.

A Public Memorial Service will be held at the TacoBell Arena at Boise State University on Feb 23, 2012 at 10 am.
Steven Robert Appleton, our beloved son, brother, husband, father, and friend died Friday, February 3, 2012. He is our hero.

Steven was born in Whittier, California. Steven would tell you his life was full of positives. He had many amazing attributes. He not only loved his family and friends, he enjoyed playing the trumpet, riding a motorcycle, playing tennis, flying planes, racing off road cars and competing in any activity. Steve lived each and every day as an adventure.

Steven truly enjoyed being a Micron employee. He considered his job an adventure, fun, and another competition. Steven enjoyed helping others any way he could. He would change your tire with the same enthusiasm as he would contribute to your charity or help your child with learning a sport. Steven filled his 51 years with the best of everyone and everything.

It is impossible to count the people and the ways Steven will truly be missed.

Steven is survived by his wife and four children, his parents, his brother and sister, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
