The 1939 Census shows the couple living in Hillside Road, Runcorn, where they were close neighbours of retired Rear-Admiral Arthur Picton who had seen service in H.M.S. Broke at Jutland.
At that time, Kenneth was working as a Secondary School Teacher in Boteler Grammar School, Warrington (then Lancashire) some ten miles from his home in Runcorn. Kenneth left a lasting impression in his teaching career: pupil Gordon Payton, whose 18th birthday was the day of Hood's loss, recalled Kenneth as his favourite teacher, and cherished Kenneth's memory until the end of his own life.
