Born in 'Big Laurel', NC on July 19, 1830 (Death Certificate shows this as his birth date). Census Records and DNA link: Ezekiel Chandler was a son of 'Old John' Chandler and Sarah Shelton. The DNA line of the men in this strand of the Chandler family point to their earliest ancestor in America as being John Chandler (1600-1658), who was the first Chandler in America, arriving at age 9 in June of 1610 at Jamestown, VA. Ezekiel received a 'common school education'.

Civil War records: Ezekiel and his brother John enlisted on April 26, 1862. They were not keen to go and serve the Confederacy, as Madison County was a Unionist stronghold in N.C. Hard scrabble farmers who owned no slaves and had no loyalty to the slave-owning counties of NC., the two brothers were mustered into the 12th Bn., Virginia Artillery, Company 'D', and by May 25th were at Battery #7 near Mechanicsville, VA. The unit was on the fringes of battle and later were on outpost duty in SE Virginia. On Nov. 4, 1863 they became the 13th Bn., NC Light Artillery, Co. 'A'. In 1864 the company served in eastern NC, with duty at Ft. Fisher, the salt works near Wilmington, and then to Weldon, NC. John Chandler went on 'furlough' in late 1864, and never came back...He would go on to join a 'Union' outfit, 2nd NC Mounted Infantry. Ezekiel was present and accounted for through Feb. 1865. There may have been some bad blood between he and his brother John when they returned from service. Both are buried on opposite sides of Chandler Cove, in two separate burial grounds.

Death Certificate shows his death from "general breakdown" (old age), on April 11, 1917. He was 87 years old. He had been a 'farmer' and was buried in the Chandler Cemetery, Big Laurel, NC. This is called Chandler Cove and is on the edge of the little community of Revere, NC today. This community was once called 'Sodom'.
