MAYSEL E. GARTIN

Maysel E. Gartin was born November 28, 1915 to William and Ella Burley Roberts in rural Wayne County. Maysel passed away October 25, 2002 at the Lucas County Health Center in Chariton at the age of 86 years.

Maysel married Harley Gartin May 21, 1932 in Princeton, Missouri. They were blessed with three children: Shirley, Connie and Eloise. They survived the hardships of the depression years by working monthly as hired hands until they saved enough to go into a partnership. They later were able to purchase the Illion farm in March, 1956. Maysel worked at the Gross-Galesburg Factory for 17 years and also helped Harley with all the farm work. After retiring from Gross-Galesburg she was an Avon representitive for many years.

Maysel was an RSVP volunteer worker and was a member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed working in the garden, planting flowers, fishing, camping, traveling, but most of all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Maysel was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ella, three brothers, Raymond, Lester and Vernon, and her husband, Harley.

Maysel is survived by her daughters: Shirley Swanson and her husband, Tom, Connie Spiker, both of Chariton and Eloise Harvey of Loveland, Colo.; 11 grandchildren: James Collins, Richard Collins, Stacy McWilliams, Jeff Swanson, Pam Burlin, Craig Spiker, Anthony Spiker, Kelli Kline, Barbara McKinney, Kevin Brewer and Kerry Brewer; 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are 2 sisters-in-law: Viola Roberts and Dollie Roberts; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

The last year of her life was spent happily at the Northridge Living Center, where she enjoyed all her friends and the staff. Some of her fondest memories of Mom was her desire to always know how much rain was in the rain gauge, her winning trip to Atlantic City, all her stories of fun things in the past and family reunions.

Funeral services were held Monday, October 28, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in Chariton with Pastor Paul Olson conducting the services. Music was provided by Marjorie Johnson singing "Amazing Grace" and "One Day at a Time" and Colene Reynolds playing the organ. Pallbearers were her great-grandsons and burial was in the Sharon Cemetery.
