Lawrence Herbert Callen was born on September 21, 1918 to Lawrence Elvin and Artie Viola (Cline) Callen.

He joined the U.S. Army, serving from April 6, 1942 to December 31, 1945. Following his discharge, he broke horses in Montana and at the Painter Hereford Ranch in Colorado. He returned to Wyoming and worked for the Chugwater Co-op, where he ran the elevator and drove trucks. He then worked at the Foss ranch.

Married Leota Marie Zimmerman on March 21, 1954 in Chugwater, Wyoming.

He and Leota moved to Casper, WY where he worked as a brand inspector for 21 years, and four years in Wheatland for the Wyoming Livestock Board. After retiring in 1984, he worked with high school rodeo programs in Casper and Wheatland, and made saddles.

He was a member of the American Legion, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, and participated in chariot racing when he lived in Casper. He also rode with the local Pony Express group in Platte County.

Stepfather of Delores Iola Zimmerman Remster (born March 8, 1935, Torrington, WY), and Rollans Zimmerman (born February 17, 1937, Torrington, WY).
