Blackula was a coal-black Manx mix, with one of the biggest personalities I have ever seen. He wasn't all that big - about 12 or 13 pounds, but he would take on anything that would come in the yard - including large dogs. (For several years after his death, we never had a problem with strays.)

When we first brought the 7-month-old puppy Buster home, Blackula's first response was to look him up and down and then pop him on the nose with his paw. Hierarchy was established, and Blackula was the alpha male of the family to the very end.

He took over Buster's bed, his food, his water and sometimes Buster's dog toys, as well. Buster never objected; he knew who was boss in the family.

In 2004, Blackula developed liver problems and jaundice, but otherwise was healthy. It wasn't until October 2005 that he started failing at a rapid rate. We said our goodbyes, and took him to the vet, where we were with him when he left us very peacefully. We miss him and his larger-than-life personality every day.
