Mr. Emmett Leslie Owens, 85, of Tallahassee, FL, died January 2nd, 2014. Born in 1928 to Charles and Lillie Owens, he grew up in Lake City, before leaving to attend the University of Florida. After graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering, Emmettserved as captain in the US Army, stationed in Germany after WWII. Following a stint in Colorado with the Bureau of Reclamations, he returned to Florida to work for the Department of Transportation in road and traffic operations, eventually rising to the head of the division. A tireless worker, after retiring from the state in 1988, he continued to work throughout his life, first for a private developer, then as a freelance consultant, only giving up his professional license in 2013. As an engineer, Emmett left a legacy behind in the roads and buildings he designed and built. More important, though, is his personal legacy. At home, his work ethic was channeled into his commitment to improving and enhancing the lives of the people in his life, a circle reaching far beyond family and friends. Everyone Emmett knew has a story about how he selflessly offered his help in a time of need. For this reason, as well as countless others, he will be deeply missed. Emmett is survived by his wife, Linda, of Tallahassee, FL, their four children, Richard Owens, of Tallahassee, FL, Pat (Mary) Owens, of Miami, FL, Lynn Owens (Penny Evans), of Burlington, VT, and Kara Owens (Neil Butler), of Los Angeles, CA, three grandchildren, Takeo and Makoto Owens, of Miami, FL, and Brooks Owens Butler, of Los Angeles, CA, and his sister, Eleanor Estess, of Lake City, FL. Services will be held at 2 pm this Saturday at Bethel Methodist Church in Lake City.
