Kenneth "Vernon" Bannon, 88, of Winfield, Kansas, passed away Sunday morning, May 01, 2011 at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita.

Born February 10, 1923 he was the son of Charles and Beatrice (Deweese) Bannon. He was raised and received his education in Cowley County. After school he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army in World War II. Upon being honorably discharged from the Army, Vernon returned to Cowley County.

Vernon was united in marriage to Glenice Rising on July 29, 1944 in Winfield. The couple spent the early years of their marriage in Cowley County. They then moved to rural Leon where they raised their family. Later, they lived on a farm near El Dorado for over eighteen years where they farmed the land. Vernon was also a member of the PRCA. He competed in many rodeos as a steer wrestler and calf roper. He also worked in the oil fields for a short time and was a foreman on an area ranch. After retiring Vernon and Glenice returned to the Winfield area.

His family includes: His Wife: Glenice Bannon of the home; His son: Glen Bannon and of Winfield; His daughters: Kendra Van Dever and husband, Walt of Chattanooga, TN; Sondra Ceynar and husband, Allen of Andover; and His granddaughters: Tracy Wittbecker of San Jose, CA; Karissa Ceynar of Andover.

In addition to his parents Vernon was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Bannon Jr., and his two sons, Gary and Brad Bannon.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Thursday May 5, 2011 at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday May 4, 2011 from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.

A memorial has been established in Vernon's name to help defray funeral expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
