Alloway, Harold Jay, 90, longtime resident of Derby, died Sat., Aug. 27, 2011, in Wichita. Born Oct. 4, 1920, rural in Labette County, KS to Hugh & Josephine (Ruttgen) Alloway. He attended school through Junior College in Coffeyville. High school class of 1938. A 45-year Beech Aircraft employee, retired supervisor in Interior Design Engineering. Served from early 1942 in WWII and Korean conflict in Navy Aviation, until late 1951. He married Juanita Ehrman of Chanute, KS December 13, 1942, in Tulsa, OK. Survived by wife, Juanita, daughter Sheryl Lynn Smith and husband Richard of West Bend, WI; son, Jay Eugene and wife Beth of Manhattan, KS; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Thomas James (died October 1977, while in the Air Force) three brothers, Ralph, Glenn and Leroy, and a sister, Lorene. Jay was a Deacon in Pleasantview Baptist Church of Derby. He served in many positions in Baptist churches. Held devotional services in camp grounds for many years, served as Chaplain for several organizations. Volunteer work with Boy Scouts, Little League Baseball, Derby Senior Center, Derby Historical Society and helped organize the Wichita Cowtown Campers. He was an outdoors enthusiast: trail hiked, backpacked, bicycle trail riding, fished, hunted (small game), run river rapids, including the Grand Canyon and camped in every state in the continental US and liked to explore the unimproved back roads of the Ozark hills. Foreign travels (other than Navy and Beech) was Canada, Mexico and Europe. He enjoyed assisting Juanita in genealogy research travels and "Tour Coach Trips." Arthritis curtailed most of his activities by 2004. Jaunita and the rest of the family will greet friends 1-2:30 pm Wednesday, August 31, 2011, at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby. Graveside service to follow at El Paso Cemetery. Memorials have been established with Derby Historical Society, P.O. Box 1054, Derby, KS 67037; Youth Horizons, 1601 E.
