Bessie was the youngest of thirteen children born to Mahlon and Mary Ann (Horton) Thorne. She was born in Santa Paula, California and lived on the ranch in Saticoy in Ventura County, until the late 1880s when they moved to the Huasna township east of Arroyo Grande, California. She met Eugene Fischer whom she married in 1899 and moved to San Luis Obispo. Bessie and Eugene had one child, a son they named Eugene B., on 19 April 1902. Bessie died less than a month later on 17 May 1902. Their son went to live with Mary Horton Thorne where she resided on the ranch in Yavapai County, Arizona.
