Sylvester J. Alger appeared in the 1860 U.S. Census for Ruggles Twp., Ashland County, Ohio, 30 years old, a carpenter, residing with his wife, Eliza, son Carmine, 10, and daughter, Harriet, 8. All were born in New York. Sylvester enlisted in Company C, 23rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry for a 3-year term of service, March 25, 1881. He was mustered out June 30, 1864 at completion of that term with the rank of Private.

The 1865 Census for the State of New York showed the family living in Catskill, Greene County, and in 1870 all were together living in South Orange, Essex County, New Jersey. On July 30, 1878, Sylvester was admitted to the U.S. Home for Disabled Soldiers at Dayton, Ohio (Montgomery County) at 48 years of age, suffering from paralysis. His residence was shown as Bluffton, Indiana, and that he was still married to Eliza E. Alger. He died at the Dayton Home March 25, 1881 and was buried in the adjoining Dayton National Cemetery.
