Ernst Chladni was a German scientist famed for his study of acoustics. He is best known for his work calculating the speed of sound using metal plates designed to vibrate when a violin was played. Using these plates he demonstrated the lines caused by the vibration of sound waves, which are today called "Chladni patterns" in his honor. Chladni also conducted some of the first experiments with tuning forks, which led to his invention of the clavicylinder, a piano-like instrument using glass rods instead of strings. He toured Europe performing popular songs on his instrument, which caused a stir among society although it ultimately did not catch on. Chladni also was one of the first to propose that meteorites originate in space, a claim which was ridiculed at the time, but which sparked immense interest in the issue and was later proven correct by Jean Baptiste Biot in 1803
