Paul Keller was a German writer and journalist and one of the most popular authors of the early 20th century. He is famous for his novels depicting his homeland of Silesia, part of the "Heimatroman" genre: sentimental novels about rural life. Some of his books include "Waldwinter", 1902; "Das letzte Märchen", 1905; and "Der Sohn der Hagar", 1907, later adapted into the film "Sohn ohne Heimat" in 1955. His novels combine a romantic longing for homeland while depicting realistic human weaknesses and failings: however, due to his Christian beliefs, he also always included positive role-models and examples of a meaningful life. His later works were not as well-received critically as his early ones, being called repetitive and unoriginal, but this did not detract from his success among the public. By 1931 his novels had a circulation of 5 million copies and were translated into 17 languages.
