The Peninsular War represents one of the most significant periods in the development of
the Corps of Royal Engineers and military engineering in the British Army. Lt Col Sir
Richard Fletcher was, for most of the war, Wellington’s Commanding Royal Engineer and
the Siege of San Sebastian his nemesis. The war was set to highlight various
shortcomings in the provision of military engineering services. From its beginning there
were 3 military engineering Corps supporting the Army.
