Growing up with his family at Roxburgh in the south of Scotland, he enlisted with the British Army at Kelso, Scotland in 1797.
Fighting through the Napoleonic Wars and being badly wounded. He retired from the Army in 1820 as a Colour Sergeant from the Royal Sappers and Miners, later called the Royal Engineers. He then came to the colony of New South Wales in 1823 with his wife and family to work for another 13 years in his country's Civil Service. He held various positions, including Assistant Engineer at Port Macquarie and was one of only two Superintendents of Convicts at this place of exile for repeat offenders.
Married a Portuguese woman he met and with whom he fell in love during his years in that country and they had three children. Always loyal to his country and to the government, he seemed never to complain. His superiors held him in high regard as a man of good character.
Through diligence and hard work, he and his wife managed to save enough money to purchase land which gave their children a start in life.
Finally, he succumbed to the poor health he had suffered since his terrible injuries at the siege of Badajoz in Spain.
