Dorothy Ann Barrett died July 13, 2011, after a lengthy battle with emphysema. Beloved wife of Nelson R. Barrett, and mother of Ria Van Fossan (Zanzano) and Margaret Sanna (Zanzano), stepmother to Carol, David, and Craig Barrett, grandmother to Dorothy Ann, Kathleen, David, Robert, Jessica, and Luke. Dorothy was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania in 1938 and grew up in Buffalo, New York, where she graduated from the Buffalo General Hospital School of Nursing. She married Joseph S. Zanzano in 1960, and was widowed in 1973. Dorothy married Nelson R. Barrett July 17, 1976, in Orchard Park, New York. She returned to D'Youville College to earn her bachelor of science in nursing in 1980. They moved to Liberty Hill, Texas in 1984. As a young mother, Dorothy sewed clothes for herself and her two daughters. In later years, she sewed dresses for her granddaughter, Kathleen, who could not wear pants due to her autism. Dorothy loved to crochet and made blankets for her grandchildren David, Robbie, and Jessica. She served as a Sunday School teacher and supported her girls in Girl Scouting; having been a Scout herself. Dorothy taught her older daughter piano and passed on her love of music to both her daughters. She cared for her husband Joseph throughout his battle with cancer and served as a wonderful role model of a strong independent woman to her girls. She was a member of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown, where she served as a deacon, elder, clerk of session, and member of the building and administrative committees. Her service included mission work and crocheting a great many hats and blankets for Su Casa De Esparanza. She was active in Rotary Clubs in New York and Texas with her husband, was president of the Orchard Park Rotary Anns and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Dorothy and Nelson enjoyed many years of flying in their private aircraft and traveling to many parts of the U.S. and Canada. They also made a memorable trip around the world in 1996. Dorothy's activities included hosting many Rotarians and Rotary International exchange students. Her passion in life was caring for her family and in her quiet time, she pursued many other interests such as gardening, sewing, crossword puzzles, and cooking. She was also an avid reader and music lover.
