Dorothy Ellen Beckett, 78, passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010, after a courageous battle with diabetes and other complications.

Dorothy was born January 6, 1932, in Green Castle, MO to the late Henry Ezra and Eunice Dail (Parmley) Burchett. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, Carroll Burchett and Glen Burchett. Dorothy was raised in the Green Castle and Kirksville area during the depression era. She helped her parents in raising her four siblings.

Dorothy graduated from Kirkville High School in 1949 and went on to achieve her Registered Nursing Certificate from the Hillcrest Medical School in Tulsa, OK. She received her Master's degree in Nursing from the University of Colorado at Boulder and her Master's degree in Sociology from the University of Missouri at Columbia. Dorothy served on the SS HOPE which provided free heath care and medical training to third world countries. She served two different tours on the ship to Indonsia and Peru. After 15 years as a Registered Nurse, she moved into teaching and research.

Dorothy married the love of her life, Jack Beckett, in 1970. They spent most of their married life in Columbia, MO until recently moving to Georgetown, TX. Jack and Dorothy were very active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, MO. Dorothy was very active in various social organizations, such as Fortnightly, King's Daughters, several book clubs and gourmet cooking groups. She also enjoyed knitting, cooking and reading.

Dorothy leaves behind her loving husband of 40 years, Jack Beckett; her son, John Beckett and his wife Emily; her sisters, Rama Day and Linda Banz and her husband Gary; her granddaughter, Ella Annelise Beckett; along with many family members and friends. Dorothy always enjoyed having her family around her, cooking for them and creating a loving home.
