US Congressman. He was admitted to the bar in 1937, commenced law practice in Gilmer, Texas and was a member of the State House of Representatives from 1936 to 1938. In 1939 he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-sixth Congress and to the six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1953. Not a candidate for renomination, he resumed leagl practice and was reelected to the Eighty-fifth Congress and to the four succeeding Congresses, serving 1957 to 1967. After his final term, he served as a judge in the United States Custom Court, New York City, 1967 to 1968.
