Political figure in Spain, was born in the city of El Ferrol in the region of La Coruña. Coming from a very humble and poor family, Paulino, as he was referred to by family and close friends, attended school since he was six until he was nine years old, due to the death of his father, which was the pillar of his family. As a result, he moves to Madrid, along with his mother and smaller brother. All three made the trip on foot, pushing a handcart with what little they had. Once in Madrid, his mother has to beg in the streets due to their dire situation, and finally, is forced to leave her two sons in the San Fernando Hospice, where he began to work as an apprentice in a printing press of the above-mentioned hospice. It is also at that time that the young Iglesias finishes his primary schooling and elects to study typography as a way of making a living. With the tips that he makes as a delivery boy, his inclination towards literature and the theater begins, and at age 12, he flees the hospice and starts to work to help his ailing mother. He works in his field of training in different printing firms for several years, thus easing the economical situation of his family, although the death of his brother due to tuberculosis brings him one of his biggest blows in life.He entered the Typographers sector of the Madrid Federation of the International in 1870, later becoming a part of the Federal Spanish Region Council of the same sector in 1871. He collaborated in the newspaper “La Solidaridad” (The Solidarity) and was in the editorial committee of “La Emancipación” ( The Emancipation ).In 1873 he entered the Printer’s Association of General Art, being the President of its governing body from 1874 to 1885.He founded the “Partido Socialista Obrero Español-PSOE” (Spanish Socialist Workers Party) on May 2, 1879, occupying the Presidency of the Party until his death.He participated in the Constitution of the Typographical Spanish Federation in 1882, being its president from 1885 until his death.He created and directed “El Socialista” (The Socialist) since its first issue in March of 1886, until 1925, excluding a short time between 1913-1915.In 1888, he founded the “Unión General de Trabajadores – UGT” (General Workers Union) and was its president from 1899-1925.He died in Madrid on December 9, 1925. His body was embalmed and exposed to the public during two days, with millions attending to pay him their final tribute. His burial constituted one of the biggest show of masses in the history of Spain, with people just crowding the streets where the funeral carriage passed through Madrid on his way to the final resting place located in the Cementerio Civil de Madrid ( Madrid’s Civil Cemetery).He was a true leader of the Spanish Socialist movement, and will always be remembered by many, having a leading role in Spanish History.
