ROBERTA G. FLANAGAN
July 15, 1924 - May 18, 2017
Roberta Gail Haun was born on July 15, 1924. She and twin Robert were born to Ralph and Anne (McNamara) Haun, joining older sister June.
Roberta was raised working in her parents' jewelry store, RC Haun Jewelry, in Merced. Later, she and June purchased the store. It was there, in the Christmas season of 1945, that she met handsome Tom Flanagan, and "set her cap on him!" Tom had recently returned from his service in the Army Air Corp, where he served as a Primary Flight Instructor in the Stearman bi-plane during WW2.
For their first date, Tom invited Roberta to go skiing at Badger Pass in Yosemite. Roberta was so excited that she asked her very best friend, Claira Albert Rodrigues, to join them. Tom and Roberta would both later fondly say that, as they drove over the "G" Street grade at 21st Street - when they caught each other's eye in the rear view mirror - they both "knew" that Roberta had just found her "perfect man!"
It would be the first of many exciting and wonderful adventures in their life together, including that first date when Roberta fell and broke her leg while skiing the slopes! For their second date, Tom asked Roberta to go out to dinner on New Year's Eve. Sporting her new cast, they drove to Fresno in his 1942 Buick Super convertible, powered by propane. Back then, both Tom and Roberta smoked, and that evening, as they drove to dinner, they were totally unaware of a tiny leak from the propane tank. Needless to say, they soon discovered the leak when Tom offered to light up Roberta's "cig-a-reet."
Suddenly, a beautiful ring of fire erupted from the propane leak - engulfing both Tom and Roberta and scorching their hair and eyebrows! They quickly began patting each other down in an attempt to douse the flames. It didn't take long for Roberta to decide that she'd better get out of the car and away from the fire. Forgetting that she had a broken leg and was in a cast, Roberta ran away from the Buick before she remembered to grab her crutches!
They enjoyed a whirlwind romance, engaged in February and married in June, 1946.
Tom and Roberta raised Tom's son Terry as well as their six children - Daniel, Bridget, Kathleen, Molly, Pegeen and Clancy - on the "Hay Camp Ranch" near Red Top. It was a wonderful place to call home!
Roberta always said that Tom was teaching her to fly early in their marriage, but then she got too busy raising "all you kids." So, on her 50th birthday, Tom decided to solo her in their Cessna 150, affectionately known as "Belchfire." The "Flying Flanagan" family became known all around as Roberta, all six children, and most of their spouses learned to fly from Tom, and each received their Private Pilot rating. Five of the eleven of Tom and Roberta's grandchildren are carrying on the "Flying Flanagan" tradition.
Roberta went into Real Estate around 1960 to help Tom provide for their growing family and farming venture. She automatically went back to her roots of selling that came so naturally to her. She loved the challenge, and excelled in the Real Estate business. She earned her Real Estate sales license in the early 1960's and her Brokers license in the mid 1960's. Roberta went out on her own and opened Red Top Realty, at Red Top, CA.
In June, 1970, Roberta opened "Roberta Flanagan Realtor" at 2000 "G" Street. Seeing an opportunity, she bought the building, and in 1978 moved to the larger office in the complex at 2098 "G" Street, now known as Flanagan Square. That location is especially significant to Roberta and Tom as that was the spot on the "G" Street grade where their eyes met in the mirror so many years earlier.
Roberta was the second woman Broker in Merced County and in 1968 the first Woman President of the Madera County Board of Realtors. Until recently, Roberta came to her office almost daily. "Roberta Flanagan Realtor" is being successfully carried on by daughters Kay and Peggy, son Dan and son-in-law Terry Priest.
Roberta always looked beautiful, and loved clothes that showed off and flattered her figure, confidence and personality. Because she was raised in a jewelry store, Roberta was never seen without beautiful jewelry and stylish clothes. She loved to give, and delighted in sharing her fashion finds with her loyal office staff, friends and family. And Roberta loved a good bargain!
Roberta loved to travel, and she was delighted when her kids provided travel opportunities. She would grab Tom and most of her kids and go wherever a jet with empty seats would take them! They traveled to Hong Kong, Rio De Janeiro, Israel, Tahiti, Rome, London and more. Roberta and Tom flew all over the world as happy standby passengers - and she loved to share her many stories! Roberta lived vicariously through her children and grandchildren.
Roberta was a mighty woman of God. For years she attended Chowchilla United Methodist Church. More recently she joined Kay and family at St. Luke's Anglican Church, and joined Peggy and family at Cowboy Church.
Now she's on her most exciting journey - to Heaven! - where she'll once again be with Tom, the love of her life.
