Obituary from the Fairbanks, Alaska "Daily News-Miner" newspaper, dated Thursday, November 5, 2009, page B-2:

Lucy Ann K. Carlo, 60, died Nov. 4, 2009, at home. Her family wrote: "After her original diagnosis of breast cancer in late 2001, she had an extra seven years to work, play and enjoy the things she liked to do before the disease finally took its toll on her body. She was grateful for those extra seven years and wanted to publicly thank Drs. Carroll and Shihaedh for their wonderful patience and sensitive staffs."

Tea and visitation will be at her mom's house, 2113 Southern Ave. Family and friends are invited. Lucy Ann will be cremated and laid to rest at her cabin located at the Yukon River Bridge.

Lucy Ann was born in the beautiful village of Ruby in 1949 to William and Poldine Demoski Carlo. Her family later moved to Galena where she attended school from the first to third grade. When her older brothers and sister were ready for high school, they moved to Fairbanks in 1957.

Lucy Ann attended local Fairbanks schools until the eighth grade and then attended Cooper Valley Catholic School for the next four years. She often said that those years at the Copper Valley School were some of her best years in terms of education, forming lasting friendships, and the kindness and understanding shown by the Sisters of St. Ann, the Society of Jesus Jesuit priests, and the many wonderful volunteer staff. They formed a great deal of the foundation she believed in today.

Lucy Ann graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a bachelor's degree in business; worked for many Native organizations including Fairbanks Native Association and Tanana Chiefs Conference. Her last employer of 17 years was Alaska Housing Finance Corp. She enjoyed working for AHFC all those 17 years and appreciated the wonderful camaraderie and spirit reflected in her division and gave much thanks to her bosses and fellow workers.

Lucy Ann was preceded in death by her father, William Carlo, and her brother, Stewart Allen Carlo.

She leaves behind her mother, Poldine Carlo; her companion of 17 years, Jimmy Whigham; her aunt, Florence Keyse; brothers and sisters, Dorothery Hertlein (Mike Chumly Ward), William Carlo Jr. (Helena), Kenneth Carlo (Judy), Walter Carlo (Gail), Glenn (Jean) and Kathleen "Sister" Carlo (Dennis Kendall); many, many nieces and nephews and other family members and friends.

Tea will be served and rosary recited at 7 p.m., today, Thursday, Nov. 5, at her Mom's home.

Burial will be held on the north side of the Yukon River Bridge in the spring. A potlatch will follow.
